Thats as close to a guarantee as The Devils Own ever gets, however, and the talents of Pitt and Ford are absolutely vital in making any sense out of this dramatically muddled scenario. Ostensibly the movies about an IRA terrorist (Pitt) who escapes from British troops in Belfast and travels to New York City, where he stays in the home of a seasoned cop (Ford) who has no idea of the terrorists true identity. The Devils Own conveniently avoids any detailed understanding of the Northern Ireland conflict, focusing instead on the cops moral dilemma when he discovers that his young guest is a terrorist. The film is superbly acted, and overall its quite worthwhile, but dont look to it for an abundance of plot logic or an in-depth understanding of Protestant-Catholic tensions in Northern Ireland. --Jeff Shannon, .com Reviled by critics and largely ignored by moviegoers when released in 1999, Random Hearts is a pox on the reputations of Harrison Ford, Kristin Scott Thomas and director Sydney Pollack, but it doesnt entirely deserve its lowly fate. The movies lugubriously paced and its repressed passions are dulled under the weight of relentless melancholy, but Pollack deserves credit for defying the Hollywood Zeitgeist with a mature, substantial film about the power of betrayal to reach beyond the grave. It is a subtly rewarding study of tormented adults whove discovered too late the weaknesses of their seemingly stable marriages.
